EMI Shielding Clip RFQ Checklist: What Electronics Buyers Should Specify

A clear RFQ helps a stamping supplier quote the right tooling, material, finish, inspection scope, and delivery plan. Use this checklist before requesting custom EMI shielding clips for electronic housings.

Quick answer: An effective EMI clip RFQ should define the electrical function, free-state geometry, material and temper, strip thickness, plating, critical tolerances, annual volume, packaging, and inspection requirements. For a production review, see our custom metal stamped EMI shielding clips application page.

1. Start with the Electrical and Mechanical Function

Do not describe a part only as an “EMI clip.” Explain where it contacts, what it must retain, and how it is assembled. A grounding clip, spring finger, shield seam contact, and retention clip may use similar forming processes but have different force, deflection, and wear requirements.

Electrical interface

Identify the conductive surfaces, contact path, mating finish, allowable resistance, and whether the clip must maintain contact after repeated assembly.

Mechanical interface

Define the mating cover or frame, insertion direction, retention load, available envelope, and any cable or fastener clearance.

2. Specify Material, Temper, and Thickness

Material selection affects conductivity, spring recovery, corrosion resistance, forming behavior, and cost. Copper alloys may suit conductive spring contacts; stainless grades may suit strength and corrosion needs. The exact alloy, temper, thickness, and applicable standard should be stated on the drawing or RFQ.

3. Define Spring Force and Free-State Geometry

Suppliers need more than a compressed height. Include the free-state position, working deflection, target contact force or force range, and the number of expected mating cycles. If the force is not yet known, identify the functional priority so DFM can compare feasible geometries.

4. Call Out the Tolerances That Matter

  • Contact height and working deflection
  • Opening width and retention features
  • Hole or locating feature position
  • Bend angle, flatness, and carrier cut-off
  • Burr direction and maximum allowable burr

Use clear datums and avoid applying a tight tolerance to every feature. This lets the manufacturer focus inspection and tooling effort on the electrical and assembly interfaces.

5. Include Plating, Deburring, and Edge Requirements

State the required plating or passivation, thickness range if applicable, areas that must remain uncoated, and whether post-form plating is acceptable. Also clarify deburring, sharp-edge limits, cosmetic expectations, and packaging protection for formed spring features.

6. Give Tooling and Volume Information

Include prototype quantity, first production quantity, annual demand, forecast, expected order frequency, and target program life. Progressive die tooling, blanking and forming operations, and inspection plans depend heavily on volume and repeatability requirements. See our custom metal stamping capability for the broader process scope.

7. Set Quality, Lead Time, and Delivery Expectations

List the required samples, first-article inspection, dimensional report, material certificates, plating certificates, capability data, and packaging method. Lead time should account for material availability, die design, tool build, trials, finishing, inspection, and freight. If you need export packaging or international logistics, include the destination and Incoterm in the RFQ.

8. Files to Attach to the RFQ

Engineering files

3D CAD, 2D drawing, flat pattern, assembly context, critical dimensions, GD&T, and revision level.

Commercial files

Quantity by phase, forecast, required delivery date, destination, packaging, inspection records, and NDA requirements.
